wearing clothes

Khaki or a warm tan color, would be your best bet. You can even get away with a tweed wool that picks up the shades of brown. Oatmeal, (kind of a beige-y white) would also pair well.

Depending on how well you can pull it off, you could try rust, as well as a darker, chocolate brown, pull the look together with a great sweater or vest or even a jacket , add a matching pocket square or a great tie to pick up the shades and give a coordinated look.

What color pants don’t match with a brown shirt? I’d like to invite you to look at it that way because there are no hard and fast rules with regard to your question. At least not anymore. It’s the same as asking if it’s acceptable to wear white after Labor Day. The answer is clear, if you feel confident in what you’re wearing, then that’s all that really matters because when you feel confident it shows and people generally respond positvely to confidence. As my dear, departed friend, Chris Locke, used to say, “honey if you like it, I LOVE IT!”

But to answer your question at face value; navy blue, charcoal gray, black, red, burgundy, orange. My stationary used to be pale pink note cards with chocolate brown lettering and borders and they looked terrific! Basically one can and should pair brown with anything, even brown for a sleek, monochromatic look. The only rules are the limits you put on your imagination and like most rules, they are meant to be broken.

As long as you are wearing pants…which is underwear by a British name….

Trousers Darker than the shirt is generally considered sartorially correct. If they Match in tone or colour, one assumes (or could assume) you are wearing a uniform.

You CAN flip this: Shirt Darker than Trousers. But again, the contrast needs to be notable enough so one is not seen as wearing an Overall/Uniform.

It depends on too many factors to make a proper response to the question. What Shade/tone/hue of brown is the shirt? What kind of fabric is it made of? What event are you wearing it to/for? Why do you possess a brown shirt in the first place?

Check men’s fashion magazines for the best answer and/or ideas you might be bold or brave enough to try. Just make sure you ARE wearing pants
